What’s your excuse?
Why excuses are valid and why choices are more important.

I’m not sure how many of you Mamas have followed the controversy that happened around a fit Mom in the States who posted pics of her incredibly fit post-baby body with the headline “What’s your excuse?”.

If you have no idea what I am talking about, here is the pic.

Rightfully so, this made a tonne of Mamas really angry and hurt and sad and a myriad of other things.  It felt like body shaming from someone we assume is on our team just from being a fellow Mama.

I get the point she is trying to make.  If she can do it, so can you.  But even that is a dangerous considering how varied everyone’s personal experiences are.  Everyone has a different metabolism, husband (or not), job, starting point, etc.

Here’s how I chose to spin this.  What’s my excuse?  I am new to Mamahood.  I am learning new things every day.  Every day my little dude has new demands, new developments, and new magic explosions of awesomeness.  I am also more tired than I have ever been.  My body feels different and works differently.  I like chicken wings and rum and cokes.  I run my own business. My big dude works 50 hours a week.  I have a million excuses.  And they are all valid.  Every. Single. One.

BUT!  How can I stop those excuses from keeping me away from my goal of being a fit Mama?  I can make different choices.  Yes I love rum and cokes but I can choose water instead.  Yes I love to sleep in when I can but I can also choose to get up 30 minutes before the little dude to squeeze in a workout.

It is not about the excuses we make;  It is about the choices we make.

Let’s commit to making better choices for ourselves.  In every moment when your gut gives you a little twinge, ask yourself “What choice am I going to make?”.

Baby Mama and Body Boss,

Jenn
